MTV's identity that refused to sit still

In 1981 a logo was supposed to be fixed. MTV's was designed to be vandalised.

The rule Manhattan Design drew a blocky M with a graffitied TV scrawled across it, then handed the shape over to animators to fill with anything — static, film, lava, hands.

Why it matters It is the first mainstream identity where the container mattered and the contents did not. Half of what we now call flexible branding is a footnote to that decision.
