The short life Founded in Milan in 1981, Memphis dissolved in 1987. In between it produced furniture and graphics that read as a direct insult to good taste as defined by modernism.
Why it matters Memphis proved that a visual language can be deliberately unlivable and still change everything downstream — the pattern vocabulary shows up in eighties graphics, nineties cups, and every third design revival since.
