The constraint Twelve by twelve pixels, monochrome, no anti-aliasing. A heart, a weather symbol, a face. Each one had to be legible on a screen the size of a stamp.

Why it matters Every emoji since is a rendering of decisions made inside 144 pixels. Constraint that severe produces vocabulary, not compromise.
