The long project Scher's painted maps began as something to do between client deadlines. They are dense, opinionated and factually unreliable — geography as remembered rather than surveyed.
Why it matters The maps are where her commercial work gets its nerve. The Public Theater identity, all crushed wood type and diagonal energy, comes from the same hand that fills a canvas edge to edge because empty space felt like a wasted opportunity.
