The London Underground roundel

The mark Edward Johnston tightened an existing station symbol into a circle crossed by a name bar, set in the alphabet he had drawn for Frank Pick three years earlier.

Why it matters It survives because it is a shape first and a container second. Change the words in the bar and the mark still identifies the network from the far end of a platform.
